Karel Hoffmann received his Ing. (with honors) and Ph.D. degrees from the Czech Technical University in Prague, Czech Republic, in 1974 and 1981, respectively. In 1990 and 1991, he spent four months with the University Tor Vergata, Rome, Italy, where he was involved with research on precise microwave measurement correction methods. From 1994 to 2002, he was an Associate Professor with the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Czech Technical University. Since 2002, he has been a Full Professor with the same institution.
Na katedře elektromagnetického koordinuje aktivity související zejména s mikrovlnným měřením a vývojem planárních mikrovlnných zařízení. Mezi jeho hlavní aktivity patří návrh aktivních i pasivních mikrovlnných integrovaných obvodů, precizní mikrovlnná měření a modelování mikrovlnných komponent. V posledních letech se soustřeďuje na vývoj nových interferometrických měřicích metod pro měření extrémních impedancí, vzdáleností a jejich aplikace ve skenovacích mikrovlnných mikroskopech.
